Chapter Sixteen

“So, tell me about Charlie,” Lexie asked Chase.

They were relaxing on the sofa in her living room, giving each other leg massages.

Chased stopped. “Why would you want to know about Charlie?”

“Well, I kind of figure that since he keeps appearing to me in my dreams that I might as well get to know what type of person he is, or was. That way it won’t seem so…weird.”

“It’s already weird if you ask me. But, if you really want to know, I’ll tell you.”

Lexie took his hand in hers. “Yes. I really do want to know.”

Chase sighed. “Let’s see. He’s eighteen minutes younger than me.”

“You’re twins?”

“Yes. Fraternal. We were close, more like mates than brothers. When we were younger we did almost everything together.” Chase leaned back in his seat. “He was always the risk taker of the family though, but things seemed to always fall into place for him, regardless. When he got into the building industry he thrived, not only financially but also in himself. He grew up. Before that he was a squanderer; he would spend every dollar that he earned before he earned it.”

Lexie listened attentively as Chase spoke so admirably about his brother. She didn’t interrupt him as he told her things that he more than likely, never told anyone else.

Chase rubbed his forehead and temple then continued. “He loved his women and they were all crazy about him too. It wasn’t unusual for him to see two or three of them at a time. What I could never understand was how they were happy to share him around like that. They all understood that he was never a one woman man but they were all content regardless. He was a chick magnet, a social butterfly and the most charismatic person that you would ever meet. When he stepped into a room, he was instantly surrounded by everyone.”

Lexie felt a pang of jealousy but she didn’t show it. She just nodded her head. She knew exactly what Chase meant. “Yeah. I get that about him. He is very charismatic.”

Chase nodded. “Yes. Everyone wanted to be a part of his life. He could have been a celebrity, there was never any doubt about that. Then, six months ago, it all came crashing down. It’s like he crammed in too much fun all at once and someone, or something, decided it was time to put an end to it.”

Chase stared out the window as he spoke about Charlie. Lexie could see that the pain he felt was real and he was still hurting.

“Go on,” she urged.

“Some say it was a freak accident, but I don’t believe it. I really think it was something else. I don’t know what exactly, it’s just a feeling that I get. I still remember the day that I came to see him. He acted strange. I’d never seen him like that before. He wouldn’t let me into the house. He just kept saying he had to sell it, but he wouldn’t tell me why.
